Each object and each space have their own characteristic resonances. based on ideas from David Tudors „Rainforest IV“, we will explore the sonic properties of obects and spaces by exciting them with electronic sounds and picking up their responses with piezo contact microphones. The goal is to build a performed installation, in which objects and spaces become filters and create a labyrinth of multiple acoustic perspective.
In this workshop we will research the possibilities to use every day sounds as a tool for artistic expression. As sound and noise are mushrooming in our everyday life, we sometimes ignore the beauty and the possibilities to arrange and compile these sounds. Humans are tonal creatures. Before we developed language, we were using our voices to make tonal sounds, imitating nature. And with that - we might just were creating our first musical compositions. We are going to take things back to the source by making field recordings. Using the sounds of the environment we might trigger those ancient connections in our brains. Hopefully to inspire us and build songs or soundscapes from.
Any experience with a digital audio workstation would be nice, but isn’t required. A mobile phone or a field recorder are fine for capturing sound.
This workshop will outline some strategies for obtaining sensor input in order to manipulate and generate sounds in a gallery installation setting. The focus will be on using Arduinos and other simple sensor inputs which we will use to trigger and manipulate sounds in Max. An overview of interactive sound installations and ideas will be discussed to get things started.
1990 – 1993 depicts the time period when Western vibes influenced the creation of Latvian dance music, and the emergence of a new dance movement – Latvian Beat. Several techno, hip-hop, rap and other bands, performers and DJs collaborated and worked independently, creating compositions and Dj Tapemix programs without electronic audio mixing devices or sequencers. Tapes were cut, glued together, looped, twitched, overwritten on top of one another in custom made tape recorders, thus compensating the lack of recording equipment and creating a unique sound. In this workshop we will listen to records made in this manner from more than 25 years ago.
In this workshop we will cut, glue, loop and compile our own compositions and music performances only with magnetic tapes, playing them on several tape recorders at once.
